COUNCILOR KANE JOINS TAX FAIRNESS WG

Ward 3 Councilor Joe Kane join the Progressive Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak in the new Tax Fariness Working Group. Read his statement below:

“Tax reform is a central reason that I wanted to serve. Last year’s Urban3 report is a good starting point for recognizing and addressing regressively in our municipal tax system. I appreciate that the administration has carved out space for this work, and I look forward to collaborating with this group to take a thoughtful look at how our city raises revenue." - Councilor Kane

The group will meet for the first time later this month and work into the spring to analyze the City’s property tax structure. They will provide reccomendations to the Mayor on how Burlington can create a more sustainable and equitable tax system.

The establishment of the working group reflects the Mayor’s committment to affordabilty and comes at a time when the City is also identifying ways to strengthen existinng affordability programs for ratepayers at city-owned utilities, Burlington Electric and Water Resources. These utilities are leaders in innovative, low income, assistance programs in the state.
